TFWA Cannes: Why Travel Retail Matters More to International Beer Brands

TFWA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes occupies a very different position from the traditional beer exhibition — and that is exactly why international beer businesses should pay attention to it.

The annual event organised by the Tax Free World Association brings the global duty-free and travel-retail industry together in Cannes, connecting brand owners with airport retailers, travel operators, distributors and businesses operating across one of the world’s most international retail channels.

Crucially for the drinks sector, TFWA explicitly accepts brands from the wine, spirits, beer and non-alcoholic beverage categories. Exhibiting businesses must generally be brand owners, worldwide distributors or authorised licensees, underlining the event’s focus on established commercial relationships rather than consumer sampling alone.

For beer brands seeking international expansion, travel retail can offer significant strategic value. Airport and duty-free environments provide access to international consumers in a single location, while travel-exclusive packs and distinctive formats can give brands an opportunity to build visibility beyond domestic retail markets.

TFWA has also increasingly focused on how younger travellers interact with brands. Research discussed by the association highlights personalisation, experience and digital engagement as increasingly important factors for younger generations — making travel retail particularly interesting for emerging international beverage brands.

The 2026 TFWA World Exhibition & Conference takes place in Cannes from 27 September to 1 October. TFWA is already inviting enquiries regarding participation in the 2027 edition, although official 2027 Cannes dates have not yet been published on its public event calendar.
