Karpackie: Polish Beer Brand Builds a Range from 6% to 17% ABV

Van Pur’s Karpackie portfolio spans traditional-strength beer, a 9% strong variant and a distinctive 17% top-fermented range, giving the Polish brand an unusually broad strength profile.

Karpackie is a Polish beer brand produced by Van Pur, a brewing group that describes itself as Poland’s largest independent brewing company and one of the four main players in the country’s beer market. The brand sits within a broad Van Pur portfolio that also includes Łomża, Brok, Braniewo, Kuflowe, Solveza and other Polish beer names.

The Karpackie identity is built around the Carpathian theme. Van Pur describes the brand as a family of beers inspired by the character of the Carpathians, with the range covering both lighter beer and distinctly stronger variants. For the beer trade, the most notable feature of the current portfolio is the distance between its core 6% product and the brand’s 17% offerings.

A core 6% beer

Karpackie Jasne is listed by Van Pur at 6% ABV. The brewer describes it as having a classically beer-led flavour built around a balance of fresh hop notes and malt aromas. The product is available in 500ml can and bottle formats, placing it firmly within the familiar packaged-beer formats used across Poland and many export markets.

That 6% base gives Karpackie a conventional entry point before the range moves into considerably stronger territory. The next established step is Karpackie Super Mocne, also presented on Van Pur’s Polish site as Karpackie 9%.

Karpackie Super Mocne at 9%

Karpackie Super Mocne is a 9% ABV beer. Van Pur describes it as dark amber in colour, with a malty aroma, an intense flavour and a predominantly sweet taste. The brewer’s Polish product information also refers to the use of smoked malts in the flavour profile. Like Karpackie Jasne, it is offered in 500ml cans and bottles.

The 9% product establishes strong beer as a clear part of the Karpackie proposition rather than a one-off extension. The current Polish portfolio then takes that positioning substantially further with Karpackie 17 Mocne.

The range reaches 17% ABV

Karpackie 17 Mocne is listed at 17% ABV and is described by Van Pur as a full, top-fermented beer with a strong character, rich malt flavour and a pronounced finish. At 17%, it sits far above the strength of standard European lager and also above Karpackie’s own established 9% strong-beer offering.

The 17% proposition is not limited to a single unflavoured product. Van Pur’s current Polish Karpackie range also lists three fruit-led variants: Karpackie 17 Jeżyna, Karpackie 17 Dereń and Karpackie 17 Pigwa — blackberry, Cornelian cherry and quince respectively. The additions create a distinct sub-range around the 17% strength level rather than simply extending the core beer by alcohol content alone.

Van Pur describes the quince variant as aromatic and fresh, with fruit acidity intended to cut through the strength of the beer. The Cornelian cherry version is positioned around a tart, lightly acidic fruit profile associated with traditional Polish fruit infusions. Together, the products combine a very high-strength beer format with flavours that draw on familiar Central and Eastern European fruit traditions.

A distinctive place in Van Pur’s portfolio

Karpackie is one of several brands operated by Van Pur, whose flagship brand is Łomża. Van Pur was founded in 1989 and began brewing beer under its own brand in 1993. Over subsequent decades the company expanded its brewing operations and brand portfolio, while also developing private-label production and export business.

Within that wider portfolio, Karpackie stands out for the breadth of its alcohol-strength ladder. The current range moves from Karpackie Jasne at 6%, through Super Mocne at 9%, to the 17% top-fermented line. That structure gives the brand a clearly identifiable strong-beer dimension while retaining a more conventional beer at the base of the range.

Why the range matters to the beer trade

For importers, distributors and beer retailers, the Karpackie range is a useful example of how a long-established beer producer can segment a single brand by strength as well as flavour. It offers products that occupy markedly different positions within the same brand family, from a 6% packaged beer to products aimed squarely at the high-strength end of the market.

The 17% line is particularly unusual in a European mainstream beer context. Its combination of high alcohol content, top fermentation and fruit variants gives Karpackie a product architecture that differs significantly from a conventional lager family built around small changes in ABV.

As the European beer category continues to fragment across mainstream lager, speciality beer, alcohol-free products and higher-strength niches, Karpackie demonstrates another route: building a recognisable family that stretches across substantially different strength levels while retaining a single brand identity.
