Backed by Thailand’s Carabao Group and empowered by new technology, the Bangkok brewer plans a roll-out of 2,000 draught beer service points nationwide, with Pattaya and Phuket first on its list

After 25 years in operation, Bangkok’s Tawandang German Brewery has launched a national expansion strategy with a landmark draught beer in Pattaya. Backed by Carabao Group, a leading distributor of energy drinks and its co-founder Sathien Sathientham, the move reflects a strategic push into Thailand’s lucrative on-trade market, and a broader ambition to grab a larger stake in a market valued at about THB260 billion (US$8 billion), long dominated by two major domestic players, Boon Rawd Brewery and ThaiBev.

Announced on 14 March 2026 in Pattaya, the rollout marks the first time Tawandang’s draught beer has been formally distributed beyond Bangkok and its surrounding areas, following more than 25 years of operations and an estimated 10 million visitors to its flagship brewery venue.

The choice of Pattaya, located in Chonburi province, is strategic. As a core hub within Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor, the province combines industrial strength with one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic tourism economies, offering a constant flow of high-spending domestic and international consumers.

The expansion has been made possible by a technology-led draught system developed over two years in collaboration with German brewing specialists and Japanese engineering partners. The proprietary system is designed to maintain brewery-grade temperature, carbonation and flavour integrity throughout distribution, addressing one of the key historical challenges of scaling draught beer beyond locally controlled environments. Complementing this is a Japanese-developed, foam-printing innovation, that allows operators to imprint images onto the microfoam head of each pour.

With each dispensing unit costing approximately THB100,000, Carabao is targeting a phased rollout of 2,000 draught service points nationwide by the end of 2026.  Phuket is favoured as the next major destination after Pattaya. The group has already introduced a “Pattaya Beer”, a 3.9% ABV lager tailored for tourist consumption; while a Phuket-specific 4.2% ABV Weizen-style variant is scheduled for launch later this year.

To meet the anticipated demand, Carabao has invested roughly THB4 billion in its Chainat brewery, which is now capable of producing up to 300 million litres annually. To help soak up the extra production capacity, Carabao has also entered a significant licensing arrangement with Tsingtao Brewery, under which it will manufacture Tsingtao beer for ASEAN export. In exchange, Carabao gains access to distribution channels in China’s Shandong and Yunnan provinces for its energy drink portfolio.
